NMR Access

Access to the CRL NMR spectrometers requires all users to be registered with the NMR facility and to have attended an NMR induction with a member of the NMR staff. The process for registering and attending an induction depends on the researcher or customer.

Following completion of the NMR induction, users may be allowed to attend an additional training for the 'hands on' spectrometers. Additional training for specialised NMR experiments (e.g., variable temperature) can also be undertaken as required.

Internal Users (i.e., researchers inside of the Chemistry department)

NMR Registration, induction and access to the open-access spectrometers:

  1. Chemistry NMR users will need to register as either an organic or inorganic NMR users. Complete the relevant form:
  • Organic NMR users: click here
  • Inorganic NMR users: click here
  1. Read the NMR open access rules found here
  2. Contact the NMR staff mailing list (nmrstaff@maillist.chem.ox.ac.uk) detailing the following:
  • Your research group and status (e.g. P2, DPhil, PostDoc, Visitor)
  • The level of access you wish to have (open access, hands on)
  • Confirmation you have read the NMR open access rules
  1. You will receive a date/time for your NMR induction via email. The training will cover how to use the open access spectrometers and the NMR Submission Service. Attend the NMR induction.
  2. The NMR staff will then add your name and email address to the open access spectrometers. You will then be able to use the open access spectrometers.

If you are unable to use the registration link or email the NMR staff mailing list for any reason, contact Caitlin Salter (caitlin.salter@chem.ox.ac.uk) with the required information.

Access to the hands ons spectrometers:

More information regarding the hands on spectrometers, including booking rules, can be found here. All hands on users must have registered with the NMR facility and attended the NMR induction. Note that variable temperature (VT) training is separate from the general hands on training.

  1. Contact the NMR staff mailing list (nmrstaff@maillist.chem.ox.ac.uk) detailing the following:
  • Whether you are an organic or inorganic NMR user
  • Your research group and status (e.g. DPhil, PostDoc, Visitor)
  • Your wish to receive hands on training, detailing any specialised experiments you are planning on running.
  1. The NMR staff will contact you detailing the date/time of the next NMR hands on training.
  2. Attend the hands on training. It is recommended for you to take notes during this training, particularly if you have never used TopSpin outside of IconNMR.

After the training, you will be added to the Instrument Booking System.

Additional training (e.g., variable temperature, 600/700 MHz, diffusion, reaction monitoring):

These training sessions will be specific to the individual users requirement. Contact the NMR staff for more information at nmrstaff@maillist.chem.ox.ac.uk.

External Users (i.e., researchers from other departments)

Please contact Dr Harry Mackenzie (harry.mackenzie@chem.ox.ac.uk) and Dr Nicholas Rees (nick.rees@chem.ox.ac.uk) detailing what type of NMR experiments you wish to have access to.

External Users (i.e., customers outside of the University of Oxford)

Please contact Dr Harry Mackenzie (harry.mackenzie@chem.ox.ac.uk) and Dr Nicholas Rees (nick.rees@chem.ox.ac.uk) detailing what type of NMR experiments you wish to have access to.
