NMR Spectrometers

The research laboratory currently houses 15 Bruker FT NMR instruments (13 solution, 2 solids) with 1H operating frequencies between 200 and 700 MHz, offering a wide range of capabilities. These include cryogenic probes, multinuclear probes, variable temperature NMR, solid-state NMR, high-power diffusion NMR and micro-imaging. There is also a Bruker AVIIIHD 400 MHz system housed in the Chemistry Teaching Laboratory (CTL).

HFX400: Bruker AVIII HD 400

Spectrometer and software specifications: Bruker AVIII HD 400 MHz wide-bore spectrometer, 2-channel Bruker Avance III 400 instrument running TopSpin 3. The equipped probe is dependent on the sample analysis requirements.

Variable temperature capabilities: BCU-I temperature regulation unit, with liquid nitrogen heat exchanger or evaporator for low-temperature work. Temperature range is approximately 193 - 373 K, depending on the set-up.

Access level: It operates as a bookable instrument for 'hands on' organic trained users who have undergone additional training, and NMR facility staff under automation and/or manual control.

Experiments: Routine 1H and 13C based 1D and 2D experiments as well as (but not limited to) 19F and 31P experiments. The cryoprobe has zero fluorine background so is well suited to studies of fluorinated ligands and proteins. The instrument is used for projects supporting biomedical research at the chemistry–biology interface.

Access level: NMR facility staff only. The NEO600 is solely used to run samples submitted via the NMR submission service.

Sample changer: a 483-position SampleJet robotic sample changer with sample chilling that is used for protein-ligand screening and metabolomics studies (not shown)

Access level: It operates as a bookable instrument for 'hands on' organic trained users who have undergone additional training, and NMR facility staff under automation and/or manual control

Experiments: Routine 1H and 13C based 1D and 2D experiments as well as more specialised experiments for these nuclei (WaterLOGSY for example), used in support of projects at the chemistry-biology interface.
